Resources from CDC to Stop Bullying

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published a new resource to help states and communities prevent bullying: A Comprehensive Technical Package for the Prevention of Youth Violence and Associated Risk Behaviors outlines evidence-based strategies for bullying prevention. In addition, CDC is offering an online Bullying Prevention Training Course teaching a public health approach through community-wide prevention strategies.
Research: Costs to Community Mental Health Agencies to Sustain an Evidence-Based Practice

A recent article published in Psychiatric Services, is based on a study that looked into a frequently cited barrier to the sustainability of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP): cost. The study tested a method for quantifying the costs of implementing EBP compared with usual care.

The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) has published a
new resource guide for youth who have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, Complex Trauma. The guide is designed for older youth, adolescents and young adults to use independently, or for clinicians and caregivers to use as a conversation guide with them.
New SAMHSA Toolbox Promotes Mental Health and School Readiness in Young Children

SAMHSA has introduced The Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC) Toolbox as a resource to support children’s healthy development, from infancy through the transition to school. The toolkit includes interactive planning tools along with videos, and other resources to support efforts in states, tribes and local communities in using the IECMHC.
Research on Benefits of Social Emotional Learning in Elementary School

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has published a research brief on the need to support social emotional learning (SEL) to improve behavioral and academic outcomes for students. The brief includes analysis of 20 years of research on SEL programs in K-12 schools. Overall, students who were provided SEL programs performed 11 percent higher in academic achievement and behavior measures, than those who did not have SEL programs. The brief also outlines recommendations for implementing SEL programs, including providing training and coaching for educators, supporting family and community partnerships and as well as policy support at the local, state and national levels.

A new 4-page fact sheet from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network discusses how families living in racially and economically segregated communities must also cope with the effects of historical trauma and inter-generational racism. It also outlines specific barriers that African-Americans may face in obtaining needed services and ideas for providers on building supportive relationships with African-American children and families who have experienced complex trauma.

Trauma Informed Oregon has created a set of recommendations on Discussing traumatic events and suicide in public meetings that may be a valuable resource for Wraparound coordinators and others when facilitating meetings. These recommendations for a trauma-informed approach may be helpful when preparing, facilitating and responding in a meeting when a participant is sharing personal experiences that may cause distress and trauma, such as suicide.
Resource Guide for Judges & Legal Partners: Best Practices for Residential Interventions

The Association of Children’s Residential Centers (ACRC) and the National Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), with funding by the Annie E. Casey Foundation, have created a resource guide for judges and legal partners when deciding on the use of a residential intervention for children and adolescents. Although services and supports for youth and their families are generally best delivered in their home and community, there are circumstances when a residential intervention may be appropriate. This resource offers guidelines for evaluating residential programs, such as the criteria that consistent support for the family (birth, kin or foster) should always be included.
