Guide to Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Programs

A new guide, “Navigating Social and Emotional Learning from the Inside Out,” is available online now from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Designed to help schools evaluate existing programs, the guide provides an overview of 25 evidence-based ESL programs and provides guidelines to help school leaders choose the best program for their setting.

Programs that teach emotional intelligence in schools have lasting impact

Authors of a new meta-analysis study published in Child Development, looked at results of 82 different school-based social and emotional learning programs involving more than 97,000 students from kindergarten to middle school in the U.S., Europe and the U.K. They found positive outcomes compared to peers who did not participate in the programs, including higher high school and college graduation rates and lower incidence of drug use, arrest and mental health diagnoses.

Suicide Prevention Resources

The University of Nebraska Lincoln’s Student Engagement Project has published a free Suicide Prevention Brief with information for educators on how to prevent suicide among students and what to do when a suicide occurs. According to the brief, “school-age students (10-19) are most at-risk for suicidal behaviors, and are most accessible for suicide prevention interventions while they are in school”.

Research on Impact of Pre-Kindergarten

The Brookings Institution recently published a report on the current research on the impact of pre-kindergarten and found “uniformly positive evidence of impact on kindergarten readiness”. According to the report, 42 states plus the District of Columbia now have early education programs serving 30 percent of the nation’s 4-year-olds and 5 percent of 3-year-olds. The report identifies the need for further research into the best ways to implement pre-kindergarten programs.

Research on Benefits of Social Emotional Learning in Elementary School

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has published a research brief on the need to support social emotional learning (SEL) to improve behavioral and academic outcomes for students. The brief includes analysis of 20 years of research on SEL programs in K-12 schools. Overall, students who were provided SEL programs performed 11 percent higher in academic achievement and behavior measures, than those who did not have SEL programs. The brief also outlines recommendations for implementing SEL programs, including providing training and coaching for educators, supporting family and community partnerships and as well as policy support at the local, state and national levels.

Community Schools Can Make a Difference for LGBTQ Youth

This recent post from the Center for American Progress highlights the many benefits of community schools that “leverage partnerships between government agencies and community-based service providers to improve the educational achievement of students by caring for the overall well-being of students and their families”. The authors argue that community schools can also improve outcomes for LGBTQ youth by providing access to services and supports.

A recent BBC story profiles CuesEd, a program being used in some London schools to help children learn how to recognize, talk about and manage their emotions. The program aims to provide children with knowledge and skills before they reach adolescence.
