Child Trends Research: High-Quality Connections Can Protect At-Risk Youth

This Child Trends research, funded through a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP), focused on youth with dual involvement with child welfare and juvenile justice systems, and the relationship between child maltreatment and later delinquent and criminal behavior, as well as the impact potential protective factors. The results suggest that increasing the quality of these youths’ connections to their families, schools, and communities can reduce their engagement in criminal behavior, and reduce recidivism.

Preventing Youth Suicide: Tips for Parents & Educators

The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) has a tip sheet designed to help parents and educators recognize suicide risk factors and warning signs. The tip sheet outlines recommended immediate actions to take to keep youth safe, if these risk factors or warning signs are observed. Links to additional resources are also provided.

New Brief: Preparing for Effective SEL Implementation

Part of a series commissioned by the Wallace Foundation, this brief written by members of the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s EASEL Lab, provides information on effective implementation of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programs. It describes the common features of the most effective SEL programs based on research findings, and provides specific implementation guidelines for schools and other organizations to consider when planning the introduction of a new SEL program.

National Home Visiting Yearbook 2017

The National Home Visiting Resource Center has published the 2017 Home Visiting Yearbook with key data on early childhood home visiting, a service delivery strategy that connects parents-to-be and parents of young children with a designated support person who guides them through the early stages of raising a family. The report includes a history of home visiting in this country, as well as information on workforce development, research in this evidence-based practice, current practice by state and a calculation of the ROI of these programs.

Programs that teach emotional intelligence in schools have lasting impact

Authors of a new meta-analysis study published in Child Development, looked at results of 82 different school-based social and emotional learning programs involving more than 97,000 students from kindergarten to middle school in the U.S., Europe and the U.K. They found positive outcomes compared to peers who did not participate in the programs, including higher high school and college graduation rates and lower incidence of drug use, arrest and mental health diagnoses.

Resources from CDC to Stop Bullying

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has published a new resource to help states and communities prevent bullying: A Comprehensive Technical Package for the Prevention of Youth Violence and Associated Risk Behaviors outlines evidence-based strategies for bullying prevention. In addition, CDC is offering an online Bullying Prevention Training Course teaching a public health approach through community-wide prevention strategies.

New SAMHSA Toolbox Promotes Mental Health and School Readiness in Young Children

SAMHSA has introduced The Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC) Toolbox as a resource to support children’s healthy development, from infancy through the transition to school. The toolkit includes interactive planning tools along with videos, and other resources to support efforts in states, tribes and local communities in using the IECMHC.

Michael Phelps and Allison Schmitt Named Honorary Chairpersons for SAMHSA’s National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day 2017

SAMHSA has announced that Olympians Michael Phelps and Allison Schmidt will be the 2017 National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day Chairpersons. Open about their own behavioral health challenges, the gold medalists are ideal role models to help youth understand the importance of mental, as well as physical health. Phelps and Schmidt will speak at The Awareness Day 2017 national event on May 4, where they will be awarded with SAMHSA’s Special Recognition Award.

Podcast: Home-visit program in child maltreatment cases strengthens parent-child interaction

NIH funded a study of a home-visit program for parents previously investigated for child abuse. The study found that the program led to dramatic reduction in the percentage of young children who were removed from their homes and placed in foster care. During the home visits, trained specialists videotaped parents playing with their children and then provided feedback for the parents to help them be more sensitive to their child’s emotional and social cues.

Community Schools Can Make a Difference for LGBTQ Youth

This recent post from the Center for American Progress highlights the many benefits of community schools that “leverage partnerships between government agencies and community-based service providers to improve the educational achievement of students by caring for the overall well-being of students and their families”. The authors argue that community schools can also improve outcomes for LGBTQ youth by providing access to services and supports.
