Event Description:

The increase of children with an incarcerated parent is one the most significant collateral consequences of mass incarceration in the United States. Parental incarceration is now recognized as an “adverse childhood experience” (ACE). It is distinguished from other adverse childhood experiences by the unique combination of trauma, shame and stigma. This webinar will address trauma and children of incarcerated parents across systems; behavioral health, primary care, law enforcement and community based. The session will focus on the epidemiology, social, emotional and economic impact of parental incarceration. Presenters will discuss behavioral health and primary care coordination for this population, bonding visits, advocacy, cross-cultural communication and law enforcement policies and protocols. The webinar will also feature photographs by Isadora Kosofsky, a noted photographer that captures the special moments between incarcerated parents and their children during bonding visits. Her work was featured in Time magazine in May 2016.
